Known by his stage name Brent Faiyaz, Christopher Brent Wood is an American singer and producer. His debut project A.M Paradox was released in 2016 in which you can find his lead single "Invite Me" and also "No One Knows" (my faaaavs!). He definetely put the world in awe... well it's my case for sure !
The same year, after he moved from Charlotte, North Carolina to settle in Los Angeles, he formed the group Sonder with producers Dpat and Atu. Into, their debut EP was released in early 2017. The group really takes R&B to another level, utilizing downtempo electronica, fractual vocal harmonies, somber piano sections and guitar plucks.
Brent's second EP untitled Lost released in 2018 includes songs with impactful verses and allow his fan to get intimate and know him better.
After stepping aside as being a group, Brent focusing on his own career which was taking off at the same time, the trio just blessed us in February with their new single What you heard.
A PROMISING TALENT !
NAO is a british singer-songwriter. With a couple of hits such as 'In the Morning', 'Adore You' or 'Firefly' ft. Mura Masa, her music is described as soul a combined with electronic music funk and R&B.
Her debut album For All We Know was released in 2016 closely followed by a tour including a stop in Paris where I got the chance to meet her !
Her voice is as sweet as herself and I am happy to share with you that her next album Saturn will be out on October 26 followed by a international tour! She will, of course, stop by Paris, London and Brussels just to name a few.
Her new song, 'Another Lifetime', is powered by pure emotions while the lyrics focus on failed love but the potential second chance in another life...
Signed under Drake's label OVO Sound, DVSN (pronounced Division) is a Toronto-based Canadian duo composed of Daniel Daley and Paul Jefferies (Nineteen85). In 2015, September 5th, they released their first songs "The Line" and "With Me"; the latest being the one through which they started gaining recognition.
"Sept 5th" will, later on, be the name of their first studio album released in March 2016.
Their second album Morning After which includes the tracks "P.OV" and "Body Smile" was released in October 2017 closely followed by a tour including a stop in Brussels in March 2018 where I got the chance to meet them !
Their music, described as alternative R&B is a pleasure for the ears, for real ! .
The last track of the album "Conversations in a Diner" is about the struggle and emotions that comes with ending a relationship, It also highlights the hopes that one can hold on to. A beautiful ode to Love; the goods and the bads it can bring (I guess?).
As you know, Summer Time also rhymes with Music Festival ! This is a worldwide phenomenon allowing fans to see their favorites artists gathered at the same place, sometimes, for a cheaper price than a concert ticket! Some of the most famous are Coachella (California), TomorrowLand (Belgium), Wireless Festival (London, UK), AfroPunk Fest (NYC, US), Essence Festival (New Orleans, US)...
Well, let's be honest... My budget did not allow me to attend Essence Festival nor Coachella so I found comfort somewhere else... Closer to my current city of residence! ;-)
On June 30th, Oh My! Music Festival was held at the Arena Park in Amsterdam.
Known as the largest urban music festival in Europe, I was glad for it to be the first festival I attend!
With more than thousands of visitors every year since 2014, Oh My! Music Festival gathers people from everywhere as it offers a line-up full of international performers.
The weather was on our side (almost 30 degrees) and the line-up on fire!
This year, visitors enjoyed them time at the Amsterdam Arena Park with four stages, which included the Main Stage and the Throwback Stage.
The Dutch Stage was my first stop as it was next to the entry. I'd be honest by telling you that I know nothing about the Dutch urban music.. However, it was definitely a good stop to be on track and start the day ! Many DJs performed that day, mixing either international urban hits or local sounds. Here are some of the performers:
- April Jordan
- Jasha Rudge
The Favela Stage was the one to check if you wanted to get into South American Vibes and Old School Music. National and International DJs enjoyed their time performing on that stage and so did the visitors (me included!!). Performers included:
- Mistery Glasses
- Sam Sosa
- Jay Martina
- Mara Wells
- Flavio Fand
- Levy and Mayla
The Main Stage deserves its name! Indeed, if you were looking for the "big heads" of the festival, that was the place-to-be! The biggest names of the urban industry were on point, singing their most famous hits all day and all night long. If urban music is your thing, then these names must ring a bell:
- T-Pain ("Buy You a Drink", "I'm Sprung", "Good Life"...)
- Big Sean ("My Last", "Clique", "I Don't F With You"...)
- Maleek Berry ("Kontrol", "Sisi Maria", "Been Calling"...)
- French Montana (Ain't Worried About Nothin", "Unforgettable", "Hurtin' Me"...)
- Wiz Khalifa ("We Them Boyz", "Black & Yellow", "Young, Wild & Free"...)
Local artists such as Boef, Jonna Fraser and Frenna also performed on the Main Stage.
I kept the best for the end !!
For those who know me, I've been stuck on the late 90's/early 00's music hits! So whenever someone introduces me to a new artist or a new song, I really feel like I was hold hostage in a cave...
However, a friend of mine recently reassure me that I may not be the only one hit by what researchers call the "musical paralysis" ! If you are close to 27/28 yo., sorry to announce you but you're about to be too ! Lol
Anyway, all that to say that I, of course, spent most of my time at the Throwback Stage!
The DJs were beasts for sure but what really got me in awe was when my favs "teenage-days" performers came up on stage! No need to introduce you to Mya ("Case of the Ex", "Fallen", Ghetto Superstar"), Bobby Valentino ("Slow down", "Turn the page", "Anonymous") and, of course, the one and only Mario ("Just a Friend", "Let me love you", "Cryin' out for me")! The artists were definitely glad to be there and the crowd on fire, singing along with them!
I, for myself, sang and danced my mind, my body and my soul out, trust me ! This is my first music festival (a box ticked in my "2018 Bucket-list") and surely not the last !
SZA, a rising star !
Did you know ?
SZA stands for "Sovereign", "Zigzag" and "Allah"
Ctrl by SZA
Besides, her first track "Supermodel" contains vocals by Pharrell Williams. She also co-wrote every song of this album.
SAVE THE DATE!
She will be performing at the LoveBox Festival in London on July 13th and the AfroFunk Festival in Paris on July 14th
